PC TimeCop Networking Guide

Networking is done using the TCP/IP protocol on a local area network (LAN).

It is assumed that there is a network already set up for WatchDog to work on. If you do not know how to setup a network, this is not recommended for you.

Server Configuration

You will need to pick one computer as the server for the clients to connect to. It can be any computer on the network. This computer will need to be running all of the time -- if it is not, the clients will not be able to log in.

In the computer that you want as the server, go into the Options screen and to the Network tab. You should see this:

If you wish to keep local copies of all the logs that clients produce, they will be put in the default log directory as <computername>_<logtype>.log

You should enter a 'networking password' in the Password box. This will allow you to shut down WatchDog in the event that the server program has stopped.

The server program is wdserver.exe, located in the WatchDog directory. It will register itself as a NT service in Windows NT, 2000 and XP, and will run normally in Windows 95, 98 and ME. This program needs to be running for any client to log in. The server listens on port 1201.

Client Configuration

The clients do not need to be configured anywhere except their network settings. All other options, users and settings will be pulled from the server on startup. Additionally, settings changes on any of the computers will be sent to all clients.

The server's address must be in IP form (ex - 192.168.0.2), NOT in name form ("server").

If you want this specific machine to have a certain login, you can specify that in the box.

You should enter a 'networking password' in the Password box for each client also. This will allow you to shut down WatchDog in the event that the server program has stopped.

Additional Information

Each user can only have one computer connected to the user.

Whenever the client is disconnected, WatchDog tries to reconnect to the server. If it is unsuccessful, the user will have the option to close WatchDog (using the networking password) or try connecting again.

The server can support an unlimited amount of users.

WatchDog cannot access another computer through a firewall.

The server operates on the port 1201. You may need to enable this port if you have a firewall.
